The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was injured following an armed robbery on Saugeen First Nation Thursday evening.
The SIU invoked its mandate after the suspect in the robbery, a 37-year-old South Bruce Peninsula man, suffered a fractured wrist, SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon said late Friday afternoon.
"At approximately 7 o'clock yesterday a man was arrested after being followed on Silver Lake Road," said Hudon. "The man was taken to the OPP detachment where he complained of a sore wrist. He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured wrist."
Hudon said the SIU invokes its mandate whenever police are involved and someone sustains a serious injury. The investigation is ongoing, Hudon said.
In a news release issued Friday afternoon, Bruce Peninsula OPP said they responded to an armed robbery at D&S Smokes and More Variety Store, located on Hwy. 21 in Saugeen First Nation.
The suspect, who had produced what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash from the clerk — who was unharmed — fled the scene in a 2007 Saturn with an undisclosed amount of cash, the news release said.
Minutes later police observed the suspect vehicle in the area of Maryville Lake Rd. and Bruce Rd. 14. Police pursued the vehicle and it was eventually stopped on Silver Lake Rd., the news release said
The suspect was arrested and taken to the Bruce Peninsula OPP detachment. He sustained a non-life threatening injury and was treated in hospital, the news release said.
The SIU was notified and invoked its mandate. A parallel OPP criminal investigation is underway, but further inquiries were directed to the SIU, the news release said.
