Six first period goals paced the Owen Sound NorthStars Junior B outfit to a much-needed bounce back win in Welland.
The N’Stars beat the Welland Generals 11-4 at the Welland Arena on Sunday night and now enjoy a two-point cushion over the Guelph Regals for third place in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Mid West Division.
It was the NorthStars first victory since May 11, and came only 24 hours after a 20-6 loss to the Six Nations Rebels which head coach Rodney Tapp called embarrassing.
Despite the strong first period, it was the Generals who got on the board first.
Zach Otto scored unassisted just under three minutes into the contest.
Then, Owen Sound took the game over.
Hayden Coulter got the N’Stars on the board before Kurt Long and Keegan Mcilmoyle combined for three goals in under a minute-and-a-half. Long scored a pair for Owen Sound and Mcilmoyle picked up his third goal of the weekend.
Youngsters Brody Caskenette and Luke Grimoldby scored before the end of the period to make the score 6-1 for Owen Sound.
Wes Hamilton was back in the N’Stars goal on Sunday night after making two appearances on Saturday between the pipes.
In the second stanza Quinton Maddock notched a shorthanded marker for Owen Sound. Caskenette and Lantz would later add tallies.
A lone Generals goal from Max Brook midway through the second made it 9-2 for Owen Sound with the teams headed into the final frame.
Just over two minutes into the final 20 Caskenette capped off his hat-trick. Maddock added his second marker of the game just 51 seconds later.
The Generals beat Hamilton twice late on goals by Brook and Peter Hrynuik, but the damage had been done.
Hamilton stopped 37 of 41 Welland shots while Generals goalie Justin Rombough stopped 6 of 12 and Matt Hines got in front of 26 of 31 N’Stars chances in relief.
Caskenette had three assists in the game to go along with his three goals and now has 28 points in seven games for the NorthStars.
Mike Fiegehen’s assist on Sunday night added the his team-high 31 points on the year for Owen Sound.
Next the Owen Sound NorthStars will return home to the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre for a tilt with the Mid West Division leading Elora Mohawks.
The Mohawks are 9-0-0 on the year. Game time is set for Thursday at 8 p.m.
