The biggest salmon seen in years at the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular has taken the lead after the first day of the 2019 event.

Wayne Hollett of Wroxeter’s 29.5-pound catch replaced Kevin Delano’s fish in the display freezer at the derby headquarters later Friday, after Delano weighed in a 25-lb. fish at about noon on the opening day.

The two monsters were among 243 fish entered on the first day of the derby, which runs until Sept. 1 and will hand out more than $150,000 in prizes.

Darren Henderson was leading the trout category after the first day, a 15.54-lb. lake trout. The top five largest trout of the day were all lakers.

The derby also includes a full line-up of entertainment all week long, with Yamaha Day on Saturday and the first giant fish fry in the evening. There will be a birds of prey demonstration and a chainsaw demonstration. Behind Bars provides the afternoon entertainment and the Fred Lewis Band takes the stage in the evening.

Sunday is Kids Day from noon to 4 p.m. at the big tent at Georgian Shores Marina, featuring rides, games, prizes and more. Other events Sunday include breakfast with Elvis and Wil Chalmers in the evening.
