“The fire investigation is still ongoing and Saugeen Shores Police with the Ontario Fire Marshal office are awaiting lab results from Health Canada and the Centre of Forensic Sciences,” Sgt. Andy Evans said by email in response to a request for an update. “No charges have been laid.”

Trevor Keating was treated for burns in London Health Sciences Centre. Witnesses said he suffered hand and arm burns after escaping his burning apartment, Unit 10 at 560 Ivings Dr. in Port Elgin, about 6:50 p.m. Sept. 20. Police didn’t identify him.

Firefighters contained the fire to one unit. A fire marshal investigator said it could take a couple of months for testing of the samples to be completed.

Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson said this week that the fire was determined to be “accidental in nature” but the cause is under investigation. Testing will look for any traces of a fire accelerant, for example, he said.
