A 37-year-old Owen Sound woman lost control of her SUV, which then slammed into a light standard, after police say she checked her cellphone to confirm an address.
It happened Saturday at about 3:45 a.m. after the vehicle turned onto 10th Street from 4th Avenue East.
The 2005 GMC Envoy jumped the sidewalk on the north side of 10th Street. It hit the post with enough force that it knocked off the light, which crashed onto the sidewalk, according to an Owen Sound Police Service news release. The pole was still standing but it appears to be significantly damaged, police say.
After the crash, the woman drove to 3rd Avenue East and parked at a local business. The SUV sustained major damage and had to be towed away.
The woman was taken to hospital after complaining of pain.
She has been charged with using a hand-held communication device and careless driving.
