Saturday will be a good day for some belated spring cleaning in Owen Sound and surrounding municipalities.
Both the periodic municipal household hazardous waste depot and Goods Exchange Day event will be held Saturday in the city.
The household hazardous waste event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city’s public works building at 1900 20th St. E. It’s open to residents of Owen Sound, Chatsworth, Georgian Bluffs, Grey Highlands, Meaford and West Grey.
There will be a number of items not accepted at the depot, including syringes and smoke detectors, explosives, unidentified waste and improperly contained waste. No commercial, industrial or farm hazardous waste can be accepted either.
There will be four more Household Hazardous Waste Days in 2020: Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 3 and Oct. 24.
For a full list of what is accepted, and to download a copy of the Hazardous Waste Report form (that can be completed before arrival), residents are asked to visit Owen Sound’s website and look under “waste management.”
Goods Exchange Day, when people put useable items they no longer want at the curb, has some COVID-19 handling guidelines to follow.
A city news release asks people to wipe with disinfectant all items placed at the curb for pickup. People should keep at least two metres apart from others, wash and disinfect all items before use if possible and wash your hands after bargain-hunting.
Popular items sought include sporting goods, furniture, small appliances, books, art, tools, toys, doors, sinks, windows and more. Tie a plastic bag to one of the items placed at the curb or place a “Free” sign by them.
