Traffic stop results in drug charges against Southampton man

A Southampton man faces impaired driving and drug possession and trafficking charges after a traffic stop in Southampton on Saturday.

Just before 10 p.m. a member of the Saugeen Shores Police Service Criminal Investigations and Drug Unit was on patrol in Southampton when a vehicle was noticed being operated in a suspicious manner, police said in a news release.

The officer spoke to the driver who showed signs of being impaired by drugs. An investigation found the driver to be in possession of a schedule 1 drug, the release said.

He was placed under arrest for drug possession and impaired driving and taken to the police station. An evaluation by a drug recognition expert confirmed that the man’s ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by drugs, the release said.

Further investigation found several individually wrapped baggies of suspected crystal methamphetamine and a quantity of fentanyl, the release said.

The 63-year-old man was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking. He was held for a bail hearing.
