(NOTE: the letter is addressed to Premier Doug Ford)
I am writing this note concerning the continuing lockdown in rural Ontario, when the real problem is in the GTA and surrounding area.
The shutdown is not accomplishing anything.
Cases continue to be above 3,000 with the majority being the new variants. There are some people talking about the 4th wave coming.
I live in Huron-Perth where new cases typically are in single digits most days and our Health Unit and hospitals or doing a good job handling it.
We and many other rural areas are not the problem. Huron-Perth was on the verge of going to a green code area when the total lockdown was announced.
Our neighbours in Grey-Bruce also have things under control.
Golf courses, outdoor dining, hair salons were open; a very high percentage of the general population followed the COVID-19 restrictions. Now even the locals are upset about what is happening.
My thoughts are, we return to the color codes and let our chief medical officers determine what should be open.
The Province of Ontario is, to my understanding, the only jurisdiction in North America, perhaps the world, which restricts golf and other outdoor activities.
British Columbia has divided the province into three areas and people are restricted from visiting or going to another area except under strict rules.
Ontario restricts Quebecers and Manitobans from coming to Ontario so emergency legislation could restrict people in Ontario from coming to Huron-Perth except for essential services.
This seems a little harsh but the existing rules are not working.
Flood the GTA with vaccines, control air travel, and border crossings; we do not have those problems. Some people will not obey these rules but the majority will.
It is time to change strategy and not have another made with the GTA solution forced on rural Ontario.
