Tesla Supercharger needs to be in downtown Goderich

Article content

A Tesla Supercharger is coming to Goderich later this year, according to the Tesla website.

Where it will be located in Goderich is not yet final. Apparently Tesla hasn’t been in contact with the municipality, so they are likely meeting with a private business.

Tesla builds and pays for Superchargers. They have an idea of where they want them, but the final location depends on who reaches out to Tesla.

I think the Town of Goderich should reach out to Tesla. They often partner with big box stores, putting Superchargers (eight to 19 parking spots) at the back of their parking lots.

While Tesla owners charge their cars for 15 to 90 minutes, they wander into those stores and shops. It’s a win for the box stores. It’s why they offer Tesla those parking spots.

I’d rather see Tesla owners support local small businesses. For that, the Supercharger needs to be downtown.

It is my understanding that the Town of Goderich is already putting a DC Fast Charger downtown, which is great, except that most electric cars in Canada are Tesla and Tesla owners don’t use DC Fast chargers – they use Tesla Superchargers. Tesla vehicles need an adaptor to use DC Fast Chargers, which most people don’t own, and Superchargers charge three times faster for Tesla.

Tesla doesn’t put Superchargers close together, just where they’re needed. This is the only Supercharger we’re likely to have in the area for years to come.

Please, Town of Goderich, reach out to Tesla to put it in the best spot.
