The Owen Sound Attack packed one more win into the suitcase after with a 4-3 victory over the Spitfires.
With the win in Windsor the Attack now bring a 2-3 record home to the Bayshore following their five-game road swing.
The Attack’s 15th-ranked power play went to work on Thursday night as Owen Sound finished two-for-four with the man advantage.
The Attack are now two wins away from clinching a playoff spot with four games remaining. An Attack win and Erie loss would also be enough for the Attack to book their ticket to the postseason.
Owen Sound haven’t been very good on the power play away from the Bayshore lately, but a unique goal started the Attack off on the right foot.
After rookie Will Cuylle buried Trent Bourque from behind the Attack went to the man-advantage where a one-time shot by Aidan Dudas hit Daylon Groulx square in the breadbasket in front of the net
In one smooth move Groulx popped the puck out of his gut onto to the blade of his stick and into the net behind Colton Incze.
Minutes later Kaleb Pearson notched his 13thof the year on a breakaway deke, and the Attack had a 2-0 lead under five minutes into the game.
Cole Purboo solved Mack Guzda just before the midway mark on a low and hard shot he rocketed from the top of the face-off circle as the Spits cut the Attack’s lead in half.
Then the game within the game began.
First Mark Woolley tried to flatten rookie Jean-Luc Foudy, which drew the ire of veteran Sean Allen. The two hit the box with matching unsportsmanlike conduct penalties only to exit two minutes later and drop the gloves. That ended the night for both players.
The Spitfires got into trouble in the second period when their leading scorer Curtis Douglas was given a game misconduct and five-minute major for kneeing Adam McMaster.
Owen Sound capitalized on the five-minute power play opportunity when, poetically, McMaster’s shot rebounded right to a wide open Aidan Dudas.
The Attack’s top-scorer made no mistake to give Owen Sound a 3-1 lead headed into the final 20 minutes.
Then it was the Attack’s turn to get into hot water with back-to-back tripping penalties given out to Sushko and Bourque.
Nathan Staios scored on the five-on-three just 12 seconds in to the third period making the score 3-2.
Minutes later Igor Chibrikov made an outlet pass up the middle to Groulx who found Jackson Doherty streaking up the wing. Doherty deposited the puck between the legs of Incze for his sixth marker of the season.
Doherty’s goal proved important as Purboo scored his second of the game moments later to cut the Attack’s lead back to one. However, Guzda and the Attack shut the door from there.
Guzda got in front of 16 of 19 shots while Incze stopped 20 of the Attack’s 24 attempts on net.
Owen Sound returns to the Bayshore on Saturday for a game against Midwest Division rival the Guelph Storm. It’s the return of Nick Suzuki, Markus Phillips, Sean Durzi and Zach Roberts to the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
